The Internet has thousands of lesson plans available to anyone. Probably hundreds, if not thousands, are added daily. In an effort to narrow things down a bit we have searched the Internet for sites that have good lesson plans. Most of the sites listed also point to other sites that have lesson plans. So, if you are a teacher-in training, or an old pro, or somewhere in between, you will find something here that will either give you some new ideas, or perhaps reinforce your old ones.

Purpose: Once upon a time there was a fable about a race between a turtle and a rabbit. The rabbit was so much faster than the turtle. During the race, the rabbit had a tremendous lead and decided to take a nap before finishing the race. When the rabbit woke up, the turtle had won the race. The rabbit was embarrassed. The rabbit knew that the rabbit was so much faster than the turtle. The rabbit challenged the turtle again to another race. In the next race, the rabbit won, easily. The rabbit was by far physically faster than the turtle. Because the rabbit became overconfident, the rabbit did not use his physical advantage. The rabbit lost the first race. Even though the turtle lost the second race, the turtle was happy when he finished the race. The End! Say Good-Bye.
Lesson: In life there are those that have a greater advantage than others. The greater advantage might allow them to win a race. But just like the turtle, happiness is determined by achieving one's own individual goal.

Purpose: Purpose: Especially for children, stories are compatible means of teaching important truths. We have gotten many familiar expressions from fables, e. g. the wolf in sheep's clothing_ who will bell the cat_?__ he that is neither one thing nor the other has no friends_ you can't please everyone_ sour grapes rationalization_ any excuse will serve a tyrant _a bully or other abusive person__ work together for the common good_ treat others the way you would like to be treated_ if we hurt others, we hurt ourselves in the process_ don't make a mountain out of a molehill_ it can be better to share than to fight_ one good turn deserves another. Let's remember that fables were originally aimed at adults.

Purpose: I've put together some student worksheets that first list 4 to 8 morals that we discuss in terms of their meaning and we also talk about examples in their lives and the real world today.
Lesson: On each worksheet there is a list of 4 to 6 morals to first discuss in class followed by three Aesop fables that the students read and then write what they think the moral is for each one. I explain that they do not have to agree on the morals since people on the internet are arguing about what the moral is for each fable but that students must give reasons for their own choice of the moral.

Name/Email: Miss Paxton
Grade level: 2-6 (or higher?)
Purpose: Becoming familiar with fables. Learning to speak in front of peers. Improving retelling skills.(ESL)
Lesson: Have each student read a simplified version of a fable. I recommend "Aesop's Fables Story Cards" by Raymond C. Clark (available through ProLingua 1-800-366-4775). After they read the fables, give each a paper, folded so that four sections are clearly visible. Have them number the sections and SIMPLY illustrate what happened in the fable. They may then use that paper, and the illustrations, for retelling the story. The pictures may be as simple as stick figures, or really complicated drawings. The emphasis, though, is on comprehension and being able to retell the fable with enough detail that it is clear the retold story is the same as the one read! Students can retell their fables to each other, and after they had practiced a few times, I had them tell me, and I typed what they said, and printed it up. They then matched the words from their retelling with their pictures. You can also spend some time talking about "The moral of the story..." but that concept was a little to advanced for my ESL students.
Comments: I was amazed at how well the students retold their stories/fables with their pictures to guide them through it! They could concentrate on remembering the details instead of trying to remember the ENTIRE story line!

Comments: His fables help a lot of people understand what has happened in life. I love the fables because in language arts, we do his fables every tuesdays and thursdays. We have to write a paragraph about what the moral is about. Then we have to write a paragraph about how it relates to life. I live in Florida and these fables have helped me a lot. My teacher Ms. Jackson is really cool and I thank her that she gives us these fables. Well that's all i have to say. bye!!!!!
